FAIRMONT MAYAKOBA RESORT
RE-USE OF AMERICA
4 SEASONS RESORT BELIZE
This destination property at Caye Chapel beckons the guest who seeks a return-to-nature, paired with the exclusive hospitality experience that only a Four Seasons Resort can deliver.
As toes sink into sand, the magic of Belize takes hold. The inward journey begins, serving to recharge the senses, healing the mental, physical, and spiritual state of the individual. A serene sanctuary encourages both disconnection and reconnection.
From the moment guests enter the Arrival Pavilion, the world slows down... Serving as a focal point of the space is the Celestial Welcome Globe - a glowing alabaster orb which invites one to reflect on their place in the universe. Guests are encouraged to pause and set an intention for their time at Caye Chapel - adding thoughtful purpose and meaning to their experience.
This property offers unparalleled opportunities for pure relaxation- a world of leisure or energetic activity depending upon one’s mood. It is a center for holistic healing and wellness where one can balance the mind, body and spirit, with nourishing live foods, in an ecologically sensitive place. Embracing the casual local lifestyle, the design of the resort will center on a perfect balance of comfort and luxury. Raw, sustainable materials paired with soft lighting, and effortlessly sophisticated furniture pieces all come together to lay the perfect canvas for the guest seeking an experience which is engaging, restorative, and inspirational.
4 Seasons Resort Belize, Dream Doha Hotel, and Fairmont Mayakoba Resort all focus on guests having unique hotel experiences on their stay. The amenities and design is unparralleled and engaging, allowing hotel guests to relax and rejuvenate.
Re-use of America focuses on the positives of adaptive re-use in our culture today. It observes the differences between new construction and re-use.
The project breaks adaptive re-use into 3 categories that are affected: sense of place, environment, and the economy. Case studies of Chelsea, New York, aid in the persuasion of the value of implementing adaptive re-use.
DREAM DOHA QUATAR HOTEL
The city of Doha was reinvented once the country
had an economic boom in the 1960s and 70’s after a
large mass of oil was found in the country of Qatar.
The city was a blank slate and attracted the attention of foreign architects and engineers to recreate the city.
The deserts of Doha surrounds the modern day metropolis of large, futuristic skyscrapers. The eclectic style of Doha’s architecture is a style within itself. Most of the skyscrapers pay homage to Islamic art and urban design.
The geometric patterns, drastic curves and metallic
exteriors pay tribute to the era of the art deco movement during 1925-1940. The similarities between present day Doha and the art deco movement include symmetrical patterns, polished materials & contoured shapes.
FAIRMONT MAYAKOBA
The world of the Fairmont Mayakoba can perhaps best be described with a single word: Abundant.
Its lush tropical landscape boasts jungles, lagoons, a sugar sand beach, and the world’s second largest coral reef. Like the art and architecture of the ancient Mayan civilization that once ruled there, the present-day culture of the Riviera Maya is vibrant and deeply compelling: full of contrast, texture, and warmth.
With nods to the Mayan fascination with the sun, moon, earth, and wind, along with the regional tradition of highly decorated surfaces, our design for the Fairmont Mayakoba feels both current and timeless, rough and refined, substantial and sheer. A truly unique place, the Fairmont Mayakoba highlights its landscape, honors its heritage, and invites guests to discover and celebrate its contemporary culture.
Throughout this semester long project, I engrossed myself in research and learning exactly what adaptive re-use is and how it can affect the environment, sense of place and the economy. New construction generates millions of tons of debris that could have been avoided by implementing adaptive re-use principles.
A case study was done on Chelsea, New York that shows how many buildings and landscapes have been aided through adaptive re-use. The area of Chelsea once was an undesirable place to live and work. Due in large part to being a meat packing district with the appearance of being dirty and in disrepair. Chelsea Market, 837 Washington, and the Highline are great examples of adaptive re-use projects that have been successful in revitalizing Chelsea.
